Project LIFE IP – Air Quality Improvement

The Primary School of Miloš Janoška met the criteria of the LIFE IP Project – Air Quality Improvement call for proposals. In January 2023, it became one of 6 schools in the Žilina Region where air pollution measurements from transport are carried out.

The primary school is interested in environmental education of pupils. It is attended by pupils who are interested in unusual environmental tasks, teamwork and field activities. So, they can make use of their knowledge and skills in this project.

Measurements of air pollution from traffic are conducted at two locations near the school over a 4-week period via passive samplers from January 11, 2023 to February 8, 2023.

The results of the measurements are reported to the school via the Air Quality Managers by an agreed deadline.

The joint measurements will help to:

  • improve pupil teamwork while gaining new knowledge about the environment;
  • improve the information of air pollution around the school and awareness of their surroundings;
  • to understand air quality and how we affect it ourselves;
  • highlight the links between increased NOx levels and busy roads near the school, the phenomenon of “parent taxi”, idling cars, etc;
  • encourage the introduction of measures to reduce individual car traffic in the vicinity of schools and educational facilities;

The results of the measurements will be presented by the pupils in their classrooms, with the assistance of the MKO, to their teachers and classmates, and subsequently to the representatives of the region and the local government.

Grandma’s Garden

Grandma’s Garden was implemented in 2019 within the framework of the SALUTE4C project – Integrated Environmental Management through Small Green Sites in Urbanized Environments.

The aim of the project was to build a rural orchard, which in the past was part of rural homesteads and gardens, on a suitable plot of land, in the grounds of a primary school.

The project, its design, implementation and sustainability, is part of the educational process for all subjects and all pupils in the school. It conditions the development of children’s personality in the perception of the land as a source of livelihood, contact with history, joy, and pride in the results of their own work.

To enliven and bring the content of the project closer to the pupils, there are practical demonstrations of the care of fruit trees during the year directly on fruit trees in the school garden or a discussion on the cultivation and use of herbs in cooperation with the ZO SZZ in Liptovský Mikuláš.

Primary School with Kindergarten Okoličianska

Director: Mgr. Maria Ivanová

Address: Okoličianska 404/8C, 031 04 Liptovský Mikuláš

Environmental projects:

Environmental projects and activities are implemented at the Primary School with kindergarten, Okoličianska, within the framework of the School Educational Programme.

Tasks aimed at environmental protection and environmental activities are set out in the school’s environmental education coordinator’s plan, which is guided by an environmental calendar. The environmental calendar includes, for example, regular activities to celebrate World Water Day or Earth Day by cleaning up the surroundings. Other activities are aimed at saving energy and materials. Such activities include making Ikebana arrangements and wreaths out of purely natural materials or carnival masks out of waste materials. In kindergarten, they create recycled paper, which is used to make their own illustrated book.

Environmental education aims to motivate pupils through experiential learning, educational concerts, lectures, and environmental excursions.

The primary school plans to introduce pupil environmental patrols, which will supervise the cleanliness of the school grounds as well as the immediate surroundings of the school.

The school is also involved in environmental projects. For example, they applied for an environmental classroom through the Green Education Fund.
