The town of Liptovský Mikuláš is one of the most beautiful Slovak cities thanks to its combination of location and natural environment. It lies in the middle of the Liptovská basin at an altitude of 576 m, on the right bank of the Váh River, surrounded by the highest and lowest mountain ranges of Slovakia.
Surrounded by the natural treasury, the city plays an important function in preserving the natural treasury. In order to preserve it, it is necessary for the city to follow environmental objectives. These are based on the basic strategic documents (Economic and Social Development Programme and others) as well as on the enactments for air, water, soil, and biodiversity protection or waste management.
The city of Liptovský Mikuláš is also the seat of important environmental institutions. These have long been involved in environmental protection. The only museum of its kind in Slovakia, the Slovak Museum of Nature Conservation and Speleology, is located here.
